Developed by Retro Studios and published by Nintendo, Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze was originally released on the Wii U in 2014 and was later enhanced in a Nintendo Switch port in May of 2018. Donkey Kong and his pals travel the five islands to get back to Donkey Kong Island before it's frozen by an Arctic enemy, the Snowmads, who are dressed up as Vikings. Released worldwide on January 16, 2025, Donkey Kong Country Returns HD is an enhanced port to the Nintendo Switch of the original 2010 Wii game, developed by Forever Entertainment and published by Nintendo. Donkey Kong and Diddy Kong are tasked with stealing their banana treasure back from the evil Tiki Tak Tribe on the 80 levels that stretch across 9 worlds. This version also features content from both Wii and 3DS releases, plus 8 new Cloud levels that were exclusive to the 3DS version. Players have options for Original mode (regular gameplay) or Modern mode (increased hearts and items to make the challenge easier), including two-player local co-op in both modes. In January 2026, a free update expanded the roster with a new playable character, Dixie Kong, and introduced the new Turbo Attack time trial mode, along with various Nintendo Switch 2 improvements such as higher resolution and faster loading times.
